We all know what winter blues are! Also known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), winter blues are the feeling of slight SAD-ness (pun intended) that slowly creeps up every winter and gets even the best of us. This shift in mood makes us feel down, less productive, and often a little depressed.
The reason for such gloominess is less exposure to the sunlight during the winter months. If you are sleeping more than you usually do, overeating, and finding it hard to concentrate, you may be suffering from SAD.
Have no fear! We have a few ways with which you can easily beat the winter blues and keep your spirits up throughout the colder months.
1) Keep Hustling
In winter, the last thing that you will want to do is to exercise or go out. Do it nonetheless. Going outside and braving the cold can be immensely helpful in dealing with SAD. It will also help boost your Vitamin D levels and increase your creativity. Take your entire family out for skiing or build a snowman together. If you have a pet, taking it out for a walk can be a great exercise too!
2) Eat Healthy
When feeling down, people are often drawn towards comfort food like ice cream and meat, which contains a high quantity of fat and carbohydrates. Although helpful at times, such food only ends up making them feel lethargic if consumed regularly. That’s why it is best to opt for a healthy diet instead! Try new recipes at home. Or if you are taking a day off, ask your family members to join you in the kitchen and spend some quality time putting together a meal.
3) Pick Up A New Hobby
Break up the monotony of your daily routine. Try something new. It can be anything, from playing a new instrument to reading a new book to volunteering for a good cause. You can even try your hand at a new language that interests you. If you want to do something creative, look for unique art ideas online that can keep you engaged for a long time. Doing something that you have never done before will only add to your experience and make you feel happy.
4) Pamper Yourself
Pamper yourself as much as you can. Redecorate your bedroom, put some music on, and relax. You can also binge watch your favorite TV shows that you’ve been wanting to watch for a while now. Apart from this, taking a warm bath and cooking delicious food are more of the many options that you can explore while you are at home.
5) Hangout With Family And Friends
Since winter months include a lot of holidays, they make for a perfect time to catch up with family and friends and have fun. They will prove to be a great stress buster for you. If you are one of those people that aren’t big fans of going outside, call your friends over for a house party and celebrate at home. Snuggling up on the couch with your special one is another way to beat the winter blues!
Remember, being active is the best way to counter winter blues. If you are struggling with SAD, then try the tips mentioned above. In case you are experiencing severe symptoms of depression, consult a doctor or therapist immediately!
